Lee, published in 4 volumes in 1934-1935, won a Pulitzer Prize and established his reputation.~~Harwell calls this a “masterpiece” in In Tall Cotton; the Nevins bibliography has this to say: “A classic example of the biographical form; exhaustively researched, vividly written, balanced, judicious and definitive in its portrayal of the Confederacy’s greatest soldier.” ~ (Nevins II, 57; In Tall Cotton 61; Howes F-350).
