UNPUBLISHED TYPESCRIPT & MANUSCRIPT DRAFTS OF TRAVEL TO INDIA
1901-1903.
Frank Frayser (1871-1958) of Richmond, VA set aside $264 to travel the world in 1900, according to a local newspaper. He also wrote about his travels to Japan in, “The Land of the Chrysanthemums”, two 1903 unpublished accounts of his journey. This collection covers his 5 writings on his journey to India. It includes “A Glimpse at the Peoples and Castes of India” (handwritten, 5pp, good), “An Evening in India” (handwritten, 36pp, v good), a 1901 journal entry titled “Darjiling, Sikkim” (typed, 8pp, v good), “On Sacred Benares” (handwritten, 10pp, v good), and “An Afternoon at an Indian Famine Relief Work” (handwritten, 11pp, good). ~~Frayser refers to himself as ‘your correspondent’, and describes from a westerner’s perspective the daily patterns of social life, religious beliefs, dress and character of different natives, tourists, and English living there, as well as to illustrate the weather, cities, landscape, and temples. He is a good writer, and his observations can range from insightful to dated to outright racist. ~~Frayser edited his text over time but never published it, leaving a truly unique turn of the 20th century travelogue. Some tears and slight losses to outer edges of some pages. Includes original labeled portfolio. Good+.
