Item #300442 TLS “MISSY” LeHAND. FDR. AMERICANA, Franklin Roosevelt, Missy Lehand.

TLS “MISSY” LeHAND. FDR.

Interesting for bibliophiles, this TLS from Marguerite “Missy” LeHand on behalf of President Roosevelt, ordering a group of Children’s Books from California bookdealer Maxwell Hunley in 1938. Hunley ran Maxwell Hunley Rare Books in Beverly Hills for many years. LeHand was known as FDR’s “Unofficial Wife” and was thought by many to be his mistress. Certainly they we were close and FDR was much attached to her (they had connecting rooms at the Governor’s mansion in Albany, and she acted as his hostess whenever Eleanor was absent). Who knew FDR wanted children’s books? On White House letterhead. Two small holes from tacks at the top of the letter, and a small amount of loss to the bottom corner.
