THE ART OF AUTHORSHIP. LITERARY REMINISCENCES, METHODS OF WORK, AND ADVICE TO YOUNG BEGINNERS PERSONALLY CONTRIBUTED BY LEADING AUTHORS OF THE DAY

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1891.

Hard Cover. Early edition. A reasonably bright early edition of this collection of personal testimonies on the art of writing collected by Bainton in letters solicited from a number of authors of the day. Noteworthy principally because this is the first appearance in book form of Mark Twain’s oft-quoted insight: “[T]he difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter--’tis the difference between the lightning-bug and the lightning” [pp. 87-88]. The industrious Bainton collected quite an assemblage of contemporary authors -- from important ones such as Twain, to lesser lights such as Miss. E. F. Poynter and William Minto. Previous owner name and bookplate on the pastedown. Small chip to the corner of the front endpaper.

Very Good+ binding.
