[RICHMOND] VARINA DAVIS’ FUNERAL PHOTOGRAPHS
1906.
Four mounted photographs from the Richmond funeral and interment of former Confederate States of America First Lady, Varina Davis. Davis died of pneumonia in her post-war home in New York City and honored with a funeral procession in her adopted city. Afterwards, her remains were transferred by train to rest alongside her husband and daughter in Hollywood Cemetery. The Richmond funeral on October 19, 1906 consisted of a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral followed by a procession to Hollywood Cemetery. Contemporary reports express that thousands were in attendance despite bad weather. ~~The first image shows her casket under guard. The second shows a view of the funeral carriage on the procession attended by hatless veterans. The third shows a view of a horse draped in black led by a man in military uniform in the foreground of Hollywood Cemetery, with a crowd in the background. Each of these is 4 3/4” x 7”. The last image is of the gravesite draped in the Confederate flag and the straps in place awaiting the casket for lowering. 3 3/4” x 4 1/2”. ~~Mounted backing with loss to corner, 4th photo & slightly nibbled edges/ rounded corners on all 4. Photographs are very good. Source of photos unknown but they do not appear to be published elsewhere.
