Full Leather. Five years of the Acts of the General Assembly of Virginia bound together, comprising those acts from 1824 through 1828. There was much legislative activity at this period regarding transportation, canals, turnpike companies and the like. And of course mundane day to day business. ~~Of note is the special act in 1826 allowing for “That Burwell, Joe Fosset, John Hemmings, Madison and Eston Hemmings, persons of colour emancipated by the last will and testament of Thomas Jefferson, deceased, shall be, and they are hereby permitted to remain as free persons within this Commonwealth...” (though they could be sold again into slavery if they committed a felony and didn’t leave the Commonwealth). ~~Taken together a remarkable picture of life in Virginia in the still early days of the Republic.
