Hard Cover. 8vo.; rebound in later brown cloth binding with titling in gilt to the spine; viii, 304, 295-331, [1], v, [1], 34 pages; the text and is complete and in the correct order, but as is often the case with this edition, pages 305-341 are misnumbered 295 to 331 (the text on these pages is correct); the pages which are numbers 295 to 310 are heavily darkened as are pages 21 to 34 in the Appendix; A reissue, with cancel title pages, of the Williamsburg edition of 1747, printed by William Parks; Evans suggests that the cancel title pages were printed in London. There exist two impressions of this work, characterized by Evans as separate editions. Notwithstanding Evans' note, both impressions appear to have been reissued in London; the Appendix has separate title and pagination; there is a previous owner name on the front endpaper.~~First published in Williamsburg in 1747, Stith’s text is one of the first American histories to be written as well as printed in the colonies, and the first such in Virginia. Stith had significant connections in Virginia, including access to the library of William Byrd, official records of the London Company, and the seminal history of Virginia.
