Quarto; a later rebound copy (with the binder’s label Meister & Smethie of Richmond) , with the original wrappers bound in; xxx, [1], 2- 116 pages; with wrappers bound in (the front wrapper with titling printed on the recto, and images of Monrovia and the President’s House in Monrovia; the rear wrapper with a view of “The Reception of President Roberts, On His Return from England” on the recto and, on the rear wrapper, views of Cape Palmas and “Edina, Bassa and Fishtown” on the verso.~~With an interesting autograph letter from Philip Slaughter to Col. John Rutherfoord informing him of his election as President of the Colonization Society of Virginia: “Richmond, February 11, 1855. | Dear Sir |~It is a pleasing duty to inform you that you were yesterday elected unanimously the President of the Colonization Society of Virginia. ... an acknowledgment of your valuable services to our society in the days of its infancy its chair was filled by the late venerable Chief Justice of the U. States. ... with high respect ... Philip Slaughter at Mr. M. Pattons”~~The election of Col Rutherfood is noted in the pamphlet as having happened at the 1855 meeting (see p. 105).~~One has to surmise that this copy of the pamphlet belonged to Col. Rutherfoord. An important association, with quite a nice letter. (Sabin 81710; Howes S 550; Haynes 16925).
