Quarto; in the publisher’s blue cloth with titling in gilt; xvii, 465 pages, including the Index; the upper board has a couple of small spots, otherwise there are no marks of any kind on or in the book; with 62 photographic illustrations; and a list of Confederate dead in Woodlawn Cemetery; and with a rather interesting description of the photographs accompanying the text.~~It is noted in the Nevins bibliography that Holmes’ works is “a reply to Southern complains of mistreatment at Elmira [and] tries unsuccessfully to blame climate and homesickness for prisoners’ suffering.” (Nevins I, 194; Dornbusch III-685).
