[CIVIL WAR] NARRATIVE OF MILITARY OPERATIONS, DIRECTED DURING THE LATE WAR

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1874.

Large 8vo.; in the publisher’s terra-cotta cloth, stamped in black in the Eastlake style and in gilt titling in banners and a Confederate battle flag and cannon; with portraits and maps, one folding; beveled edges; there are no marks of any kind.~~Harwell notes that “Johnston’s was one of the first narrative by a major Confederate military figure” and is “a vigorous defense of his own actions” [ITC, 101] while Nevins observes that this reminiscence is “partisan, anti-[Jefferson] Davis, and defensive in tone” [Nevins II, 68]. ~~As nice a copy as one is likely to find. (Howes J, 167; Nevins II, 68; ITC, 101).
