(7 1/2” x 5”), in the publisher’s red morocco with elaborate ornamentation blocked tin gilt to the upper board and the spine; [vii], [17]-328 pages, with 6 plates protected with tissue guards (Faxon and Tepper both call for 8 plates); all edges gilt; this copy rebacked with the original spine laid downl there is a previous owner gift inscription on the endpaper to “Lucia H. Warner | A token of affection | from Wallace” ~~A presentable copy of The Gift for 1843, albeit rebacked, in which appears the first printing of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum” (pages 135 - 151), perhaps Poe’s best known study of the effect of terror -- the opening line, “I was sick -- sick unto death with that long agony.”.
