It is certainly from the “lost cause” era (the dedication is to “The Black ‘Uncles’ and ‘Aunties’ and ‘Mammies’ whose matchless fidelity during the war evoked the admiration not only of the South, but of civilized humanity the world over.” The author, Norman Kittrell, was a Judge in Texas. (Krick 98).
