Two large 8vo. in calf bindings, with red and black morocco labels. xvi, [lvi] Index of Cases, etc.; 490 pages; [lii] Table of the Principal Matters; [lx] including Notes on the Second Volume; [1], 764~6 pages, cxxxii, including Table of the Pirncipal Matters and Index to the Notes; there a couple of dark, but not obtrusive; stains to the calf bindings; there is some scattered foxing.~~The First American Edition, taken from the Third London.of this digest of cases compiled first by Thomas Vernon, and then annotated by John Raithby, both prominent lawyers in the English High Court of Chancery. This set belonged to Briscoe G. Baldwin, graduate of the Virginia Military Institute class of 1848, and private secretary of Alexander H. H. Stuart of Staunton. Baldwin saw much service in the Confederate Army, being first in charge of the Arsenal at Richmond where he looked after the ordnance manufactured by the Tredegar Iron Works, and then serving in Rode’s Brigade at the Battle of Seven Pines where he was seriously wounded. Upon recovery, he was assigned to the immediate staff of Generaly Lee and was in charge of the Secret Department of the Army. After the war he spent time in Lynchburg and Staunton, before relocating to a cattle ranch in Texas, where he died. An uncommon and desirable set, complete in two volumes.
