THE AMERICAN ARMY IN THE WAR OF SECESSION

Leavenworth, Kansas: George A. Spooner, 1894.

Hard Cover. First Edition in English. 8vo.; in black library cloth with a leather title label, and a chipped paper call label; 245 pages, including Content; [1] in which Geo. Spooner described the advertisements in “this series” [Spooner’s Military Library] as “of benefit to the readers” ... “and to those firms represented”. This copy with library marks from “The General Service Schools Library” at Fort Leavenworth, stamped “Withdrawn”. With the publisher’s pink errata slip laid in. With the first couple of leaves separating at the bottom of the gutter.~~We find the book cited in Nicholson, (and even Nicholson misstates the publisher) but not in the other usual bibliographies. The content seems to be mostly statistical, trivial, and laudatory of the US Army. For example, regarding the convalescent camp at Fairfax: “Everything is provided which would tend to keep soldiers from being tempted to leave the camp. There are promenades, a chapel, a library containing six thousand volumes, well-stocked sutler’s stores ... sister of soldier are often authorized to remain in the camp and no inconvenience has resulted. The camp is, in reality, quite like a city.” (p. 103). A soldier is allocated a hat, coat or jacket, Greatcoat (in the first year), flannel shirt, flannel drawers (4 pairs), stockings, bootees (4 pairs), leather gaiters (1) etc. (p. 175); regarding rations, “The ration of the American soldier is incomparably better than that of the soldier in any European army” (p. 200) and “in cases of excessive fatigue or severe exposure issues of whiskey are ordered” (p. 201). It’s no wonder they won.~~The French edition was issued in Paris in 1872. Uncommon in commerce. (Nicholson 224).

Good binding.
