[GRAPHIC DESIGN] [TOBACCO AD] WINNER PLUG TOBACCO. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO COMPANY, PETERSBURG VIRGINIA

Richmond, Va. A. Hoen & Co., [c. 1890].

10 3/8 x 10 3/8”; color chromolithograph label for “Winner Plug Tobacco” backed in linen. The British-American Tobacco Co. was the advertising company and labels such as these were intended to be pasted onto tobacco crates and barrels. With a fantasy horse race image.~~The Hoen Company was founded by August Hoen in Baltimore (the factory can be seen to this day from the Amtrak train going through Baltimore) and relocated to Richmond. Hoen’s lithographs were “top of the line” so it is not surprising that the wealthy tobacco companies employed their lithographic art.
