[AUTOGRAPH ALBUM] 1885. LACKEY FAMILY. FANCY HILL. NATURAL BRIDGE VIRGINIA

Small autograph album, 3 5/8 x 5 3/4”. With chromolithographic title page. Sporadically filled with a number of entries by Lackey family members at “Fancy Hill”, near Natural Bridge, Virginia. Inscribed by Evelyn M. Lackey to “Cousin Bettie”, Christmas, 1885. With a number of die cut chromolithographic pretties, pasted in.~~Several inscriptions, including a couple by Lackey family members, are dated “Fancy Hill”. There are at least two rather dour inscriptions with advice / hopes for Betties marital prospects: “Bettie | Be content with thy lot | God has made out for you | Love home, and obey him in all things | around your last days will be | peaceful and happy. | Your, | Mother | 1886” and “Miss Bettie | As sure as comes your wedding-day | A broom to you I’ll send; | In sunshine use the brushy part, | In storm, the other end. | Your sincere friend, | Mollie L. B.”~~We haven’t puzzled out exactly who “Cousin Bettie” was, but we certainly hope that she was happier than some sentiments would suggest!~~~~.
