London: T. and J. Allman, 1823.
16mo. Full Leather. The set complete in 45 16mo. volumes, bound in green straight-grained morocco, with double rules with elaborate gilt and blind stamping at the perimeter; raised bands with decorations and lettering gilt. turn-ins with deorative rules; pale brown endsheets; there is a name label on the pastedown of each volume. All edges gilt.~~Of the editor, or compiler, Lionel Thomas Berguer, virtually all of the entries we find about him say “Little is known” or words to that effect. We do know that he was born in 1789 which makes him about 34 when this 45 volume set was completed. He was, according to the title pages, a Fellow Extraordinary of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh. We think he was an extraordinary fellow to have completed these 45 volumes by the time he was in his early thirties.~~A pretty little set, very much intact, with some modest scuff marks. About 6” tall and filling about three feet six inches of a shelf. All you ever wanted of the British Essayists, at least up to 1823!
Very Good binding.
