REMINISCENCES

Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Company, 1917.

First Edition. Signed. The lively and highly anecdotal reminiscences of John McCarty, sometime policeman, detective, New York City Marshal, and ultimately U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York. ~~In his career he handled such cases as the Phoenix Bank Defalcation; the counterfeiting of Bank of Albany Bills; the thief stealing eggs and other foodstuffs from Delmonico’s restaurant; security at Boss Tweed’s daughter’s wedding. and much more. This man got around in the New York crime circles in the second half of the 19th century. And he was happy to tell the reader all about it!~~In the publisher’s burgundy cloth binding, with titling in gilt, and the badge of the U. S. Marshal Service stamped in gilt, red, white and blue to the center of the upper board. Apparently printed up for family members and friends, this copy is sigend by Mr. McCarty on a Presentation leaf.~~Uncommon, with no copies found in the trade as of 07/05/2020 and seven institutional holdings found on OCLC.
