Two Holographic Poems. Metaphor: Like: = I [&] Metaphor Like = II

1980.

“Writ Out for Fred Martin, 1980” and signed by Gregory Corso.~A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions. Apocryphally at least, Corso “writ out” the poem for Martin at a bibulous evening at one of New York’s watering holes. In his time at New Directions, Martin worked with Corso, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. ~“Metaphor” is a variation on Corso’s poem “Piffle”, published in 1980 -- the same year the poem was “writ out for Fred Martin.” Shortly thereafter, following the assassination of John Lennon, Metaphor Like = I was reworked and retitled “For John Lennon.” Corso’s practice seems to have been constantly to re-write, revise, and recycle his poems, perhaps to fit the occasion.A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions.
