Shinzo Fukuhara

Tokyo: Japan Photographic Society, [1937].

Hard Cover. First Edition. Signed. First Edition of Shinzo Fukuhara’s The Sunny Hawaii, signed and dated by the author on the title page. Born in Tokyo, and educated at Columbia University, Fukuhara would settle in Paris in 1913. With 24 full page photographic plates, originally photographed during a trip there in 1936. A fine example of Fukuhara’s technique, which plays with the gradation of light and evokes a certain nostalgia, a modernist approach popular in Japanese photography of the 1920’s. Two divisional title pages, with additional title page in English, and title page in Japanese, stating ‘Oahu,’ ‘Hawaii,’ ‘The Light with its Harmony,’ and ???? respectively. Text in English and Japanese, with preliminary introductory leaf, by the author, with minimal color map of Hawaii. Foxing to the preliminaries and title page, with foxing, spots of surface loss, and wear to the covers. Hinges repaired by a conservator. Drab card boards, with color paper label in Japanese on the front board, and printed lettering on spine. Overall in Very Good condition.

Very Good binding.
