FIFTEEN CARTES DE VISITE OF HAWAIIAN ISLANDERS, LEADERS, AND FIJI LEADERS BEFORE THE ANNEXATION OF HAWAII.

Honolulu: M. Dickson, [c. 1880].

Backmarks of M. Dickson, Honolulu. All but one of the fifteen cartes de visite are annotated on the verso in pencil, identifying the subjects of each mostly in a general manner. Examples include: Hawaiian Hula Dancers; Hawaiian Grass Dealers; Fiji Chief; and the Governor of Hawaii, Princess Ruth Ke’elikolani. Five of the fifteen cdv’s are in fact reproductions of other photographs or illustrations; otherwise, the cdv’s appear to be mainly photographs of various members of society in the free Kingdom of Hawaii. Each cdv measures about 9 x 6 cm. Additional notations include: Maj. Mochomu(?); Queen of the Fiji Islands; Hawaiian Grass Houses; Hawaiian Poi Dealer; Kamehameha I; Lunalilo; Hawaiian Style of Dress; and one illegible annotation.
