Item #288823 [MILITARY] HUMOROUS BROADSIDE; ALBERT J. RODGERS. TRANSPORTATION CORPS, LIVORNO

[MILITARY] HUMOROUS BROADSIDE; ALBERT J. RODGERS. TRANSPORTATION CORPS, LIVORNO

An elaborate and comic broadside. presenting an “Honored Degree of Genius of Mathematical Orders” to one Albert J. Rodgers -- “Marine Superintendent and Watcher of the Curveline for Missing Vessels”. The “degree” is hand-lettered on a 32 x 20” piece of parchment, and has a seal emblazoned with a drawing of a sinking ship. Watercolor illustration of man on rigging and fish at the top. Our honoree Albert Rodgers must have been part of the Transportation Corps at Livorno, Italy as he is hailed as a “Charter Member of the Mob from Calata Assab [the port at Livorno]; “a Swapper of Tall Tales with all Mates and Masters Cruising the Mediterranean”; he is a “Boasting Berther and can be frequently in the vicinity of Daughters of the American Revolution and Campfire Girls gatherings”; etc, etc. It is signed by Herbert B. Erb, Capt. in the Transportation Corps [next to his signature his wife wrote “Please remember Norma Erb”], and signed as well by numerous “Fellow Dock Hands of the Transportation Corps”. We presume this was presented at a farewell banquet -- and that hilarity ensued.
