Hard Cover. First US Edition, First Printing. First US Edition, First Printing, with the First Binding of the First American Edition. Complete in two volumes with twelve plates. With all points of the First Printing, e.g. title page is a cancel, signature marks do not note volume, superfluous signature marks are present on pp. 311, 341, etc. Note that according to BAL, “copies of the book dated <1848> [on the title page imprint] were issued years after first publication of the first edition.” With the “Burgess | Stringer & Co” imprint on the spine, which is noted by Van Winkle as “undoubtedly the first binding.” Significant toning to the title page and frontispiece, with some offsetting to the pages opposite plates; contemporary name on the front pastedown; very minor foxing. Moderate shelfwear to the bindings, significant sunning to the spine, and rubbing to the boards. Original fine-grained TR plum cloth, with gilt lettering and designs, and embossed decorations.
