SABRE STROKES OF THE PENNSYVLVANIA DRAGOONS, IN THE WAR OF 1861-1865 | THE SABER BRIGADE. THE FOURTH REGULAR CAVALRY, etc.

Philadelphia | Washington: Lutheran Publication Society | Allied Printing, 1884 | [1923?].

Hard Cover. First Edition. Signed. An interesting copy of this account of the pre-war militia that was incorporated into the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. James Robertson, in his section of Nevins’ bibliography, expresses admiration for this regimental history: “Contrary to its flamboyant title, this narrative of cavalry operations in the Deep South is a factual, reliable account by an obviously fair-minded soldier” [Nevins I, 82]. This copy not signed by Dornblaser, but was mailed by him “To Comrade E. W. Oyster” in Washington D.C., with a return address from F. F. Dornblaser in “Nowawes, Germany near Potsdam Bucher Str. 11”. The address and the return address -- presumably in Dornblaser’s hand -- are cut out from the package wrapping, along with several German stamps, and pasted on the first blank leaf, which is clipped. The title leaf is also corner clipped.~~Tipped in to the front pastedown is a stapled pamphlet by E. W. Oyster entitled “THE SABER BRIGRADE...The Fourth Regular Cavalry. The Fourth Michigan Cavalry. The Seventh Pennsylvania Cavalry -- “The Saber Regiment of the Army of the Cumberland” --General Rosencrans. 8 pp. Mostly including excerpts for “Minty and the Cavalry” by Captain Vale and correspondence from Gen. James H. Wilson’s Report regarding The Wilson Raid Through Alabama and Georgia; it concludes with a list of Surviving Members of the Seventh Pennsylvania. ~~This copy has loss to the spine affecting the “D” in “Dragoon”; it has been rebacked with most of the spine laid down. (Nevins I, 82).

Good binding.
