Full Leather. First published in 1479, Platina’s Lives of the Roman Popes was the first systematic book of papal history, and would earn him the office of Vatican Librarian with Pope Sixtus IV. This being an early seventeenth century edition, with engraved portrait illustrations throughout, and updated to include all popes up to the contemporary, Pope Urban VIII. Previous owner’s name at the top of the title page. Scattered worming to the fore edge of the text. Fore edge of the textblock inked with ‘Platine,’ causing shallow troughs to the textblock. Front joint repaired using sympathetic cloth. Full vellum, with titling inked on the spine.
