ROBERTI BARCLAII. THEOLOGIAE VERE CHRISTIANAE APOLOGIA.

Londini: Apud Assignatos J. Sowle, 1729.

Octavo. Full Leather. Editio Secunda, Priore Emendatior. A Second Latin Edition copy of Robert Barclay’s Theologiae Vere Christianae Apologia. A Quaker apology, and the text which generated much discussion over the Quaker religion at the time of its first publication in 1676, and cemented Barclay as the voice of the early Quakers. Barclay was later appointed governor of East Jersey, after it was sold to a group of twelve people who were almost entirely members of the Society of Friends. Text in Latin. Collates complete, with the index and final errata leaf; xxiv, 492, [22] pp. Previous owners’ names on the front endpaper and title page: George Temple, Elizabeth Demoville, Samuel Demoville, Temple E. Demoville, and Richard Stark; dated 1750 and 1779. Gnawing to the edges of the textblock, affecting primarily the front board and first sixty leaves, but not affecting the text or pagination; spots of staining to the fore edge of the textblock and sections of minor dampstaining to the edges of the text. Cambridge style leather binding; fully rebacked, with the original boards. (ESTC T86093. DNB I, 1088-1089).
