[LITERATURE] A LETTER FROM MR. CIBBER, TO MR. POPE, INQUIRING INTO THE MOTIVES THAT MIGHT INDUCE HIM IN HIS SATYRICAL WORKS, TO BE SO FREQUENTLY FOND OF MR. CIBBER’S NAME.
London: W. Lewis, 1742.
Full Leather. Second Edition. The Second Edition of Colley Cibber’s response to Alexander Pope, which would earn him the label of ‘King of Dunces’ in Pope’s Dunciad. The literary squabble began after Cibber, a comic actor, ridiculed Pope’s poorly received “Three Hours after Marriage” while Pope was in the audience. The situation escalated when Cibber was named England’s poet laureate for political reasons, and surely spiraled during a mutual trip to a brothel; the hunchbacked Pope was paired with the largest woman in the establishment, and Cibber snatched him off his precarious perch in a ‘heroic’ gesture. The latter anecdote is here recounted. Two bookplates on the front endpaper. Modern red morocco; dentelles. Collates complete. 66 pp. (ESTC T37906).
Near Fine binding.
