New York: [William E. Chapin], 1867.
Half Leather. Fourth Edition, Second Issue. The Fourth Edition, presumed Second Issue, of Leaves of Grass with all of the points according to Myerson. Bound in half black leather with red, orange, blue, and white nonpareil (or combed) marbled paper covered sides. The spine has double rules and the title, blindstamped and goldstamped respectively, and is still in very presentable condition. Discreet repair to the top of the spine effecting the uppermost double rule. The contents page incorrectly lists Drum-Taps in addition to Leaves of Grass and “Songs Before Parting”, as called for by Myerson. The copy was lacking its front free endpaper, and a sympathetic period endsheet has been archivally hinged in. All edges trimmed and marbled with the same pattern as the paper-covered boards. There is minor wear to the edges of the binding, as well as some rubbing to the marbled paper boards. A section of loss to the front pastedown has been patched with japanese tissue. The title page has a contemporary gift inscription. (BAL 21399 | Myerson A 2.4.a).
Very Good binding.
