LUTHER’S CHRISTMAS TREE

LUTHER’S CHRISTMAS TREE

Philadelphia: Lutheran Board of Publication | Lindsay & Blakiston, 1855.

Original Wrappers. First Edition. While 19th century Lutherans very much liked the idea of Luther and his family gathering around a Christmas tree (see the Frontispiece illustration) this is in fact an early representation of a Christmas tree in an American religious tract. “References to the use of Christmas trees in Sunday school Christmas celebrations are come upon but infrequently in the newspaper press, and not before 1858, in which year trees are reported for Bristol, writing in Bucks and Lancaster City” [Shoemaker; Yoder. Christmas in Pennsylvania (2009); p.75] In yellow printed wrappers, with soiling, minor loss to the bottom corner and to the spine. 32 pp. with full page wood-engraved plates.

Very Good binding.
