[SOUTHERN AMERICANA] A YANKEE AMONG THE NULLIFIERS, AN AUTO-BIOGRAPHY
New-York: William Pearson, 1833.
Second Edition. Interestingly, Asa Green “became the first American to apply the term [autobiograph] to a ‘narrative of [his] life written by himself,’ when he published ... A Yankee Among the Nullifiers, an Auto Biography, under the pseudonym Elnathan Elmwood” [see Arnold Krupat, For Those who Come After: A Study of Native American Autobiography, p. 40]. An uncommon record of contemporary life in Carolina, under the guise of a fictitious account of Yankee Elnathan Elmwood travels to South Carolina where he runs fro Congress; his speeches inspire a group of slaves to lead an uprising. In the publisher’s paper covered boards backed in green cloth, with a partial paper label to the spine. Some damping and scattered foxing throughout. (Wright 1068).
Very Good binding.
