London: Parker, Son & Bourne, 1862.
First Edition. It is tempting to say that Lawrence made a name for himself with his first novel, Guy Livingstone, which “astonished novel readers ... with its deification of strenghth and very questionable morality” [DNB, (1922) Vol. XI, p. 695]; however, as Guy Livingstone was published anonymously that seems a questionable assertion. A first printing in book form of this Lawrence’s third novel. Two volumes, in a worn binding of marbled boards backed in leather with cloth corners, a style of binding we have rarely seen.
Very Good binding.
