Original Sewn Wrappers. One of the best known preachers of the age, Henry Ward Beecher, charged with committing adultery with his friend and parishioner Thomas Tilton’s wife Elizabeth. The nation was roiled and riveted. Tilton brought tort charges of “criminal conversation and alienation of affection”. At the end, the jury was deadlocked, and Beecher perhaps (perhaps not) was exonerated. The post-trial account of the New York Times, in original sewn.wrappers.
