Niikura burst on the Japanese photography scene in 1965 with Dizzy Noon in which he presented a series of color photographs taken on the day the Japanese government opened the US Naval Air Facility Atsugi to the public. Niikura focussed on the cross cultural dynamics taking place in one afternoon. In Wonderful Street he brings the same kind of nonjudgmental focus. He eschews dramatic tricks for a deeper, more penetrating aesthetic.
