New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1904.

Hard Cover. First Edition. First Edition copy of one of Maria Howard Weeden’s four books of poetry and accompanying illustrations. Weeden developed her skill as an artist after the Civil War, when to help with the greatly depleted family finances, she began to teach art classes and sold hand-painted note cards and other mementoes. She was exposed to the caricature-like work of A. B. Frost’s illustrations for Uncle Remus when she saw them at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, and resolved to make realistic depictions of the black folk she had known all her life. Her depictions seem dignified and respectful. ~~This copy, while intact and reasonably bright, has what appear to be puncture marks to the rear board. There are previous owner initials to the pastedown which appear to be contemporaneous.

Good binding.
