New York: Minton, Balch & Company, 1931.
Hard Cover. First Edition. Signed. This copy is signed not by the author but by Douglas Southall Freeman with a splendid inscription presenting the book to his friend and owner of the Richmond Newspapers John Stewart Bryan: “This is one of the first ‘advance’ review | copies of the first edition of what probably | will be one of the most esteemed items in | the whole of American collected short stories. It | was sent to the Richmond News Leader two | weeks prior to its formal publication in March, 1921 | D. S. Freeman | For that first and | finest and friends | John Stewart Bryan”.~~We believe this case Dr. Freeman was both hyperbolic and erroneous -- The Road to Canaan is probably not “one of the most esteemed items in the whole of American collected short stories”. Wrong or not, this is a significant presentation from the Pulitzer Prize winning author to “that first and finest of friends”.
Near Fine binding / Very Good dust jacket.
