L’ASSIETTE AU BEURRE, Nos. 157 through 183 [Lacking Nos. 161 and 166]Paris: 1904. 25 issues of the French satirical magazine from April through October of 1904. An important vehicle for French anarchist designers, with each issue containing many full-page drawings or cartoons. The purpose of “The Butter Plate” was to make fun of authorities -- the rich, the military, police, priests -- and to address social issues like the death penalty, birth control, child trafficking, and many others. These issues contain fantastic illustrations by artists such as Gustave-Henry Jossot and Ricardo Flores, as well as Francois Kupka’s issue on Religions (No. 162). L’Assiette ceased publishing in 1911, but it had an impact on an entire generation, and provided a model for many satiric journals to follow. Item #251890
